Once called Futu (富土, Fùtǔ) before changing its name to Tongli (铜里, Tónglǐ) and then ending up with the name Tongli (同里, Tónglǐ; different first character) Established in the Song Dynasty. It has a history of over a thousand years with the bulk of its buildings now constructed during the era of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Magic numbers on the wall, in the small town of TongLi, on the outskirts of Suzhou, Jiangsu province. It is known for a system of canals, it has been given the nickname "Venice of the East".
